Ironing clothes: What is a ‘must-know’

Iron Covers, Ironing Cloth

Ironing one’s clothes is one of the most important household tasks that needs to be mastered. Following is a guide for the facts you need to know before you go about doing this everyday.

Being self dependent is essentially a necessity in today’s times. One needs to understand that learning how to do little chores at home is not only beneficial in terms of keeping one active, it also saves a substantial amount of money. For instance, instead of giving clothes for laundry, if one knows how to wash them at home, a very high amount of savings can be done. A similar chore in this aspect is the art of ironing.

Although a very small task if considered as an individual, ironing is a time-taking procedure, plus being an expensive one if taking external help. The advantage of learning how to iron is more than the cost factor, since it also makes sure that you are not dependent on anybody for your day to day needs, and that in case that person does not make it or leaves you high and dry in the middle of nowhere one fine day, you can at least take care of your important attire related problems easily.

The first thing one needs to know about ironing is how to adjust temperatures. There are different settings for different types of clothes, with the sensitive ones requiring lower temperatures and the stronger ones like jeans requiring hotter ironing to make sure all creases are taken care of properly.

Another strong issue one faces very often is that of leaving the iron in standing position after ironing all the clothes because of the heat, since it can’t be kept horizontal or inside a box due to the heat that is still there on the plate. An ideal solution for this is an iron cover, which is a kind of a case in which you can place the iron after the task is over so as to prevent heat transfer to any other object.

Another important accessory to own is an ironing cloth, which is a sheet that is available to be spread on top of the surface on which you are ironing to ensure smooth ironing and prevent damage to the surface. For instance, if you are ironing on a steel base, the heat that is transferred from the iron can easily damage the base over a period of time, besides giving you an uneven iron on your clothes. The presence of an ironing cloth ensures that you get an even ironing throughout your clothes, and protecting your base in the process.

And lastly, the fact that steam irons are more effective than their traditional counterparts is always a truth, particularly when it comes to more sensitive fabric. The usage of moisture can never be denied, and even if you do have a steam iron, it might be necessary to sprinkle a few drops of water to get an even better ironing experience. Further, if the plate gets too hot, one can also sprinkle water to lower the temperature, although this is not a sure-shot measure and is only a quickfire remedy, in case you are in a hurry.

Organising the wardrobe : The hardest ‘how-to’ guide

Clothes Hangers

Clothes Hangers

Organizing one’s wardrobe can be quite a task in itself, and although any kind of organizing seems to be very cumbersome at first, organizing wardrobes is something else altogether, since it always seems that hardly 3-4 days after you have put everything to place, it always seems to get disorganized automatically. However, personal experience showed me that there is nothing wrong with the almirah or the fact that you are organizing too infrequently, it is actually the manner of organizing that is the main issue. Often the way most wardrobes are kept is by stacking all types of clothing one on top of other in separate stacks. The more organized ones might at best stack clothes by categories like shirts, trousers, skirts, and so on. However, this is where the fault lies, since there are many times when we are confused regarding what outfit to wear and end up upsetting the whole wardrobe in order to find the perfect dress. In such cases, a skirt or trouser hangers come out to be most handy.

The most important advantage of having hangers is that you can easily organize your clothing with the maximum utilization of space, even if you don’t have much of a vertical space (though it is advisable that you should). Further, you can easily browse through the collection of clothes you are having without disturbing the entire setup, since everything is hanging and all you need to do is just flip. Other advantages include that you can figure out combinations without actually trying them, there are no crease marks due to the folds you would have made in case there were no hangers, and the fact that you have plenty of other free space to use according to however you might see fit. Further, there are also hangers for specific purposes like coat hangers to hang suits, and children’s hangers, that come in a special size according to the size of children’s clothing. All in all, there’s one hanger for every kind of garment, and you can benefit from them in more ways than one.

Clothes Rails

Clothes Rails

Life in many aspects becomes a lot more easy when you are the organizing types and know how to manage your resources best when it comes to keeping things at a place in a systematic manner so that they can be found later. However, many of us do not often follow this practice since it seems to be a very time-taking procedure at first, and we feel that since it’s our own house, we would obviously figure out ultimately as to what is kept where. But this does not happen always, does it? And it is then that we feel the need to reorganize everything, but later obviously, because right now, there’s an important meeting, going to work, the date you have been waiting for, and so and so forth. And hence, the work you had intended to do never gets done, and the organizing task always stays pending, and continues to create problems. However, it is not possible to organize everything at one’s place, but few essential aspects must always be kept so that they can be useful when the need is there. One of these elements is clothes. The definition of our personality, one is immediately judged on the basis of the kind of clothes he or she is wearing. Hence, keeping them organized is an extremely important task to undertake on a regular basis.

Picture this, you have to go on a meeting on an urgent basis, and suddenly find that there is no proper outfit that would suit the occasion, and to top it all, there is no such thing as an organized wardrobe in your house. This is one situation that is bound to create problems. However, if the almirah or closet is kept organized in due time, this problem can be solved quite easily. One of the foremost tools in this aspect is a clothes rail, that is the first thing you need in any wardrobe. Although there are other options like you stacking your shirts and trousers on top of each other, this is an issue when you consider the fact that this practice can leave creases on clothes, shirts in particular. However, if you have a clothes rail and hangers, you can easily organize your clothes and keep them in proper shape. These days, there are cloth rails available in many shapes and sizes, such as 3ft clothes rail, 6 ft. clothes rail and so on.

Shoes : An important part of your wardrobe

Shoe Racks, Boot Shapers, Shoe Accessories

Shoe Racks, Boot Shapers, Shoe Accessories

Footwear is clearly what defines a person, and should be given more heed to than even clothes, since they need to be constantly polished, kept spot free, aired, to ensure their long life. Following are some tips on how to maximize the life of your favourite shoes.

The complete personality of anybody is not complete without great shoes or footwear, and to maintain them, requires proper care in terms of how they are kept, polished, and so forth. Following are a few handy tips to make sure you take proper care of an important angle of your overall personality.

  • Always make sure you store shoes properly in shoe organizers. These could be racks, or trees, wherein shoes are kept/hung pair by pair so as to reduce any chances of the dirty soles of one soiling the upper side of another. Besides, such a practice also helps you to keep them in a very clean and proper state by giving them proper air.
  • Another advantage of using organizers is that shoes are always easily accessible, and you can know as to which shoe is not in a proper condition to be worn and needs to be replaced, or stained and needs to be polished. Further, this also helps in making sure that in case due to some infection one pair of shoes is smelling, the smell does not pass on to the other shoes.
  • Always ensure that you air your shoes once a month, or better still, every fortnight. This is done by leaving them out for a couple of hours in the sun to make sure that any chance of infection is eliminated, and also helps shoes with special material like suede, etc. in staying in a good condition.
  • In case of leather shoes, make sure that they are polished once in every 4-5 days, regardless of whether they are used that often or not, since this helps in keeping the shoe material in a good condition, and also allows it to hold on longer.
  • In case of shoes with alternative material like suede or nu buck leather, make sure they get sufficient air, and spray them with the recommended spray from the a good dealer or the shop from where you purchased it. These kind of shoes have a greater tendency to get spoil due to the sheer nature of their material.
  • Make sure that you always use shoe horns to put on your shoes. Often, it is only the backside of the shoe that gets damaged, purely because of our inherent habit of stuffing our foot whenever we are in a hurry. Keep the shoe horn handy, maybe in the shoe racks for example, and you might save your shoes a good year and a half.

Laundry clothes : Precautions you need to take

Laundry Bags and Hampers

Laundry Bags and Hampers

Taking proper care of clothes is one of the most important tasks one needs to learn in order to stay self-dependant in today’s times. Even if you are having the capacity to hire a laundry to do the washing for your clothes, keeping them improper shape is something only you can do, since they are your clothes. Following is a list of steps you need to take in order to ensure the proper care of clothes.

Ensure that you take proper sized laundry baskets while taking your clothes to the laundry. Many of us ignore this step and just wrap the clothes with a sheet of cloth and take it for washing. However, such a practice is wrong, and damages clothes in the long run since it runs a chance of buttons getting broken, cuffs and collars being damaged, etc. In a similar manner, the laundry bag or basket that you choose to take should be having the appropriate size as per the requirement of clothes you have to be washed at a particular time.

While taking clothes back from the laundry, be sure to check for missing buttons or even clothes themselves, since only if you know it there and then can you inform the concerned person to help you in looking for the same. Further, be sure that you know regarding the sensitive clothes, if any, that need special care while washing, so that you can inform of the same to the laundry personnel to avoid complications at a later stage. Agreed, they are professionals, but a little precaution from your side will be very beneficial especially if you have a few special clothes that you don’t want to risk damage for in any case.

In case of dry cleaning-related clothes in particular, be sure to have a clean laundry basket that is free of any kind of stains, since there is no method of washing that is full proof, and if there is any stain that catches on to your cloth and can’t be removed, it would be you who would be the sufferer. Take it for granted that there is no such thing as a guaranteed washing method that can remove all stains.

Keeping children’s clothes properly : What to do and what not to do

Children Storage

Children Storage

While there might not be very expensive materials that are used in a child’s clothing, it is nevertheless important to make sure that whatever is the nature of their clothes, it is important to take care of them. The first and foremost step for this is to make sure that their clothes are cleaned and dried properly, since more than seventy per cent of all cloth-related problems are because of the fact that some stain always remains or that the cloth is not properly dried and still has moisture. Further, the storage of such kind of clothes creates further issues, since when there is not enough space among clothes and they are just stacked on top of each other, it always creates problems, since the moisture then gets transferred to other clothes as well. Having proper hanging organizers or hangers in their fabric wardrobes is the way one can counter this problem.

Moreover, there is also a very inherent habit of housekeepers, particularly women, of keeping children’s clothes in underbed storage cabinets. While this is a good choice in case you are short of storage space, it is very important that you ensure that once your child’s clothes are taken out in the season, they must be washed once again to make sure that there is proper hygiene for the coming time. Further, the material of the storage bag must also be chosen carefully, so as to keep clothes in the ideal condition. The best bet would be a duvet bag, since it permits clothes to breathe. Also, you might want to classify your child’s hangers as specific ones for shirts, shorts and so on, so as to make sure the almirah stays organized, and you don’t have a problem in finding the right dress for any occasion.

Lint : The worst enemy, with a simple solution

April 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Clothes Brush

Clothes Brush

Very often, it so happens that we have a very important meeting or interview, and that is precisely when everything starts to fall apart. The toast burns, the dog won’t let go of your trousers, you find out that there has been an emergency power cut, and so on. While many of these situations seem o be out of hand and happen very infrequently, one of these happenings can be rued rather easily. That problem is lint.

Yes, we have all experienced it. As soon as we put on our favourite shirt for that perfect impression, we notice that there is lint at certain areas, and nothing can be more irritating, particularly if it’s a dress code kind of a thing or you had planned specially for the dress to look that way. This can happen most often in case of suits. When the perfect shirt does not match due to problems of lint, you need to have a solution at hand. A lint roller is a perfect answer to this.
Simply put, a lint roller is a one-sided adhesive paper roll available with a spindle and handle. To use, all you have to do is to roll it on the areas from where you need to remove lint, and the adhesive paper will attract all the pieces, thus leaving your shirt, or any other piece of clothing, spotless. Once the paper/roll has completed its work and needs to be changed, you can replace with another roll available as a separate piece in the same spindle. Animal owners are particularly familiar with this problem, and a lint roller makes for the perfect blessing in case you have a habit of hugging your pets goodbye, or have enthusiastic pets who always have a habit of staying close to you and hopping on to your lap whenever they get the opportunity. Further, lint rollers can also be a great way to remove other small attachments like dandruff flakes, etc. from your clothes. However, one major precaution to take care of is that you use the lint roller only on dry areas, since a wet portion of clothing can damage the adhesive coating on the roller.

Storage bags : Something you’ll always need

Storage Bags

Storage Bags

Clothes are a very important aspect of our personality, and hence, it is most imperative that one makes sure that they are taken care of properly. Every year, there is the same cycle of putting in old clothes and taking out the next season’s clothes. Besides a few instructions for winter clothes that always demand extra care while washing and storage (such as the use of sweater bags), there are a few standardized procedures one must follow before storing clothes in closets, almirahs, etc.

The first and foremost important point is to make sure you have properly washed them. Although this might seem like a very normal instruction, and you might say ‘what’s so special about this’, but the fact is that while day-to-day washing can allow you to be a little careless while the washing procedure is taking place, once you want to stack clothes in storage bags for 6-8 months, you better make sure that they are cleaned properly. For instance, in case of shirts, make sure the collars as well as the cuffs are absolutely dirt free. In case you want to be sure, you can also take external help by sending them to a laundry (yes, it is expensive, but necessary in case you are in doubt of your cleaning capability). This is mainly because just in case there are some stains left, they either would become so permanent by the time you take the clothes out the next time that you won’t be able to remove them, or they would weaken that specific portion so bad that even the slightest of wear and tear would do irreparable damage. Further, there’s also the fear of moths and other insects, that always seem to get attracted more to dirty clothes. Which reminds me, that you also need to put in anti-moth balls while storing clothes, besides keeping the storage area clean.

The last point is for the proper kind of storage bags; you must use particular bags meant for the purpose, like suit bags for suits, plastic bags would go with almost anything, duvet storage bags in case you want to allow the clothes to breathe a little, and so on. Further, there are also various underbed storage bags available these days, to make sure you get them particular to the way you want them to be stored.

Caraselledirect, com is a pioneer website catering to the UK audiences with their unique products at the best prices from quality brands all across the country. They also provide a wide range of storage bags in all shapes and sizes.

Organising things the way they should be

Hanging Organizers

Hanging Organizers

Organizing is simply one of the most irritating activities one has to do, but also one of the most important if you want to save time when your are in a crunch. Here are a few important items you need o keep your wardrobe in place.

When it comes to organizing things, most of us are desirable to find an option to do the same, but are not really one of those ‘organizing types’, or that is what we at least think, it is a well recognized fact that staying organized always helps, and although it seems to be a tedious process, going for an organized approach in many aspects of life often saves a lot of time and is very convenient. And thanks to the numerous options we have in order to assist us in our endeavors in staying organized, it is not a very big ask any more. Following are methods to help you stay organized in various areas of day-to-day life, with a little help from fittings and fixture.

Hanging rails are a very common sight mostly in almirahs and bathrooms, and tend to serve various purposes, albeit very small ones. They can serve to be a place to hang fresh towels/clothes, or their used counterparts as well, and in the insides of almirahs for the same purpose. Although we often tend to forget to install hanging rails in the required places, it always leads to better convenience and space saving.

• A hanging shoe organizer might not be the most common fitting at a house, but the main advantage it brings is the savings on space. Many times, we face the problem of unorganized shoe racks with shoes stacked on top of each other, which leads to the ones at the bottom getting stained badly and in some cases, also smell badly. With a hanging shoe organizer, this problem is automatically solved, as shoes are not placed at appropriate spacing, and not on top each other.

• Sweaters are the most unorganized for many of us almost all the time, and it always seems to be a real task to put them in place. Even if you do make it a point to organize your cabinet once a week/fortnight/month, it always seems to get as bad as it was before you know it, mainly due to the new additions you have to do frequently, and the indecisiveness regarding which combination to wear on which day. However, with a hanging sweater organizer, one can be sure of keeping them in proper order, since it gives you an ad-hoc storage place in case you are in a hurry and can’t properly stack sweaters properly.

• Kids always seem to put away all their things at all the wrong places, or misplace them more often than you can think. For the prevention of such kind of events to happen, an over door hanging organizer for kids is always the best option. It has plenty of pockets and lets kids store toys, toothbrushes and other small essentials that always seem to be misplaced when they are most needed.

Caraselledirect.com is a UK based website offering a wide range of wardrobe organizers from leading brands in the country at the most competitive prices. There are also different options available at the site to suit your needs for every item.

Put hemming to anything in minutes : Wundaweb comes to the rescue

April 21, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Putting hems to almost any item is quite a task in itself, and more so if you are not the stitching types or need the stuff quickly. Here, a wundaweb tends to be most helpful, and allows you to attach hems to almost anything in under one minute.

Change is something that is constant in life, and the same applies to everything we have around us. For instance, many times you get a good job opportunity and need to migrate to another city, country, or home. Under such cases shifting your stuff is quite a task in itself, but when it comes to altering your fittings with specifications to your new home, that is where one gets really irritated, particularly when your job is a traveling one and you need to keep on traveling, staying at different places for 1-2 years. Even if it is a rented place (which is the most logical option, unless you are extremely well off financially), there are certain elements like curtains that might not always be present, and you might need to carry them. However, not all windows are alike, and hence, you might often have to be faced with a situation when you have purchased a curtain for 10 feet, whereas your new home has the same of just 8 feet. One option can be to buy new curtains, but if you are a person who can’t stay at a place for long, buying new curtains every year is not a wise option (although an expensive one!). The solution to all such problems is a wundaweb.

Simply put, a wundaweb is a soft nylon fleece that is feels like a gauze, and comes wrapped around a card for smaller lengths and in a roll kind of shape for longer lengths. It bonds the fabric together and is washable and dry cleanable. The main advantage of this wonderous invention is that it allows you to ‘create’ your own hems fast and easy, perfect if you are not really the stitching types (and even if you are, it does stay long enough to be of great help). Besides, it also saves you quite a substantial amount by not needing the piece of fabric to be given for stitching. Top use a wundaweb, all one needs to do is to create one’s own ‘hem’ and crease it by the means of a hot iron. Then, cut out the desired length of wundaweb and cover the folded hem completely with it, and place it on the area where you need the hem to be created. Then, take a damp cloth, place it on top of the wundawebbed hem, and place a hot iron over the same for around 10-12 seconds. Do not iron along the hem. Instead, just press it firmly on the cloth, and allow it to cool. Once the cooling is done properly, you may remove the cloth and find a proper hemming done on the curtain. However, sometimes it does happen that the web sticks to the bottom of the iron. In such cases, you must immediately take a dry cotton and wipe it clean, otherwise it would result in a sticky residue on the plate of your iron, and you run the risk of having the same on any of the clothes you iron hereon. Further, in oreder to again extend your curtain to fit longer lengths, all you need to do to break the bond is to place the damp cloth again, out a hot iron for 10 seconds, and just peel apart the fabric.

A wundaweb can also be used to put hems on other fabrics like jeans, skirts and dresses, and works on mostly all the fabrics, though velvet or pile fabrics are not preferred ones to use the same.

Caraselledirect.com is a UK based web portal catering exclusively to the British audience. It features some the best brands in clothing care and accessories at the best prices. A wundaweb is just one of their many offerings.
